Visual Art
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS – PLEASE SAVE!
Welcome to art class! I am Mr. Canfield, the art teacher for Steeplechase Elementary School. We will meet weekly, all year long. In this class, we will focus on studio work, art history, cultures, and an overall appreciation for the arts! This introduction will open the world of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and so much more!
Why take Art?
• Stimulates the brain and develops problem solving thinking.
• Help builds self-esteem
• Promotes self-expression
• Promotes non-verbal communication skills
• Engages the senses
• Builds keener sense of perception, which contributes to better decision-making abilities.
Rules:
We follow a simple set of rules:
We will also follow the school’s PBIS system.
Collaborative Art Room:
In our class, we sit at tables together. Each student will be placed at a table for the year. Collaborative means that we work together and aim for success! Each table is labeled an artist, i.e. Picasso. Each session, students will work with their tables to become the “best” in the classroom by following rules, directions, answering questions, etc. They will be penalized for not following rules, directions, etc. After class, the strongest collaborative table will receive a reward of art bucks (Ref. Art Bucks below). They will also become a “lead table” to assist Mr. Canfield next class.
Artwork and Artsonia:
As we begin working on studio projects, students will accomplish some amazing art pieces. For the primary (K-2) and intermediate students (3-5), they will get their work once graded. If their work exceeds the assessment or expectations, I will ask to keep it for school displays and an art show. With parental consent, all artwork will be published online through Artsonia.com. Permission slips will be sent home with the Art Newsletter. If a permission slip was previously signed last year, you will receive a login reminder. Artsonia is a wonderful opportunity to keep all artwork safe online and share with families/communities. Parents are able to control many aspects of their child’s portfolio. You are able to buy products online with student artwork on it.

Respect Yourself! Respect Your Classmates! Respect Your Teacher! Respect Your School!
Please respect your classmates’ space. Do not touch anyone’s artwork unless asked. Same will happen with your personal work! In an art room, please do not touch or play with objects/materials that do not pertain to the class project. Only use the supplies offered for the specific lesson.
Procedures will be posted daily on the board including learning target(s), schedules, and any other further information.
Absent Work:
If a student is absent, they will work with their table to get caught up. I will also work alongside the table to ensure the student gets any class material and handouts.
Consequences:
The following actions will be taken for repetitive poor choices:
1st Offense is a warning – Your first personal offense is a verbal notice/DOJO
2nd Offense – Reflection time and personal talk
3rd Offense – Parent Call Home
4th Offense – Office/Principal Referral
Rewards:
Art Bucks Raffle Ticket – When making positive choices, participating beyond expectations, or any other great deed, students will receive an Art Buck. They will place this Art Buck in a raffle container at the end class with their name on it. I will draw numerous names per grade at the end of each month for great prizes!
Lead Table – The best table in the class will be assisting Mr. Canfield during our next class.
What about materials?
I will supply the majority of the materials in class. If students have to take their artwork home, they are responsible for their own materials. Plenty of time will be given in-class to complete assignments.
Can we talk about grades?
Grades will be posted on infinite campus. Also, students will receive rubrics, grade checklist, etc. with their artwork with the grade. Comments will be placed along with grades! Personal communication is key!
